Famous Salsa Recipe

My salsa recipe is now my famous salsa recipe.  We competed in a homebrew competition yesterday (and won!), and of course there were food pairings with each beer.  You have to enhance the beer flavors!  The famous salsa was paired with the–now award winning–IPA.  The beer was the real star of the show, but there were tons of requests for the salsa recipe.  Even the old hispanic men were asking for it!  That’s when you know you have a winner!  So here it is again, the famous salsa recipe.

You can also check out The Manhattan Project’s facebook page.  That’s the brewery.  Website and additional marketing coming soon.  We couldn’t go into this with too much arrogance, but now we have bragging rights!

I have seen some pins claiming to be the world’s best salsa, and I feel it is my duty to set the record straight with the recipe for the real world’s best salsa.  I have been duped by Pinterest recipes before, and it was a sad day in the Sanford kitchen.

What was my first clue that these pins were a lousy imitation?  Cilantro and lime were missing.  Isn’t that a staple, like tomatoes?

This is a basic salsa recipe that will knock your salsa dancing socks off. That was cheesy.

Back to Basics Salsa

  • 28 oz can of peeled tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4-6 garlic cloves, chopped
  • Juice of 2-3 limes
  • Handful of cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp cumin
  • 2-5 peppers, mix of serrano and jalapeno, chopped
  • S&P to taste

Throw it all in a blender.  Don’t puree though.  The pulse button is perfect for salsa.  Taste as you pulse so that you can make any necessary adjustments.  I put this salsa on everything.  Eggs, chicken, veggies, you name it.

Need to troubleshoot your salsa?

  • Too flat?  Add more lime or cilantro.
  • Too watery?  Add a little cumin or garlic.
  • Not spicy enough?  Add more pepper.  The level of heat in each pepper is unpredictable.  You might need 3 jalapenos one time and 2 the next.

The Truth Hurts

This conversation just happened with someone in my coworking space.  The truth hurts.

Bob:  We need to hit this networking group together next week. It is supposed to be amazing.  Everyone that is everyone in Dallas is there.
Me:  Is it early in the morning?
Bob:  Yeah…7:00… *look of disappointment*
Bob:  I know you are wine drinker, so it might be hard for you.

Ouch!  I don’t think he was kidding.  I do like wine, but not that much.  Okay, maybe that much, but I can give it up.  I don’t really want to, but I can if I have to.  No wine tonight.  Maybe I will have a beer instead.

Totally kidding, guys.  I don’t have a problem and don’t drink that much.  Poor Bob is very misinformed or he has read too many of my blog posts.  You decide.

Come Clean Friday

I wore a Snuggie in a bar.  Not because I was participating in a pub crawl or because I thought it was cute.   I was freezing and it was the only thing in my car that could keep me warm.  It was a white elephant gift a couple years ago that quickly became the dog blanket.  I can mentally hear everyone breathe a sigh of relief.

We were watching football in a bad ass beer bar (The Friendly Spot), and I was wearing a pink Snuggie.  Okay, the husband was watching football.  I was tweeting and deciding what team has the best uniform.  The Friendly Spot is an outdoor bar and on this chilly evening, even a beer buzz couldn’t keep me warm.  So, I shamefully put on the Snuggie.  At first I tried to wear it like a chic shawl.  Yeah right…a chic, fleece, pepto pink shawl.  I eventually wiggled it up around me and wore it like a bathrobe.  Just like they do in the commercials.  The husband was proud.  So there is my Come Clean Friday story.

PS – If you are ever in San Antonio and like beer, you must visit The Friendly Spot.

Jester King and Mikkeller Beer Dinner

We attended a Jester King and Mikkeller beer dinner at The Common Table last week, and I think I had more fun taking photos with my friend Tait than drinking beer and eating food.  It was quite the collaboration.  The photos are below.  Favorite beer of the night…Das Wunderkind.  It is surprisingly sour and funky.  The majority of the table loved Mikkeller’s Barrel Aged Black Hole.  Not my palette at all.

Favorite photo of the night…you decide.

Trade: Beer for Playlist

You would think that with how much we enjoy music, the fiance and I would have no problem making a playlist for the upcoming nuptials.  Nope.  We are avoiding it like I avoid wearing flats.  In fact, can I pay one of you to make a playlist for me?  We pay in pizza and beer.  Really good pizza and beer.  You can figure out what I like based on the music category on this blog.

The hardest part is done though.  We selected “our” song.  Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.  It’s not at all expected or even a slow dance song.  But it is a pretty fantastic love song.

Home is wherever I’m with you
Home is when I’m alone with you

How to Make a Beer Shirt Office Appropriate

We all do it.  Occasionally we toe the line of office appropriate apparel.  I just do it more than most.  I am a rebel that way.  The man can’t keep me down!  I have a few beer shirts I have been trying to circulate into my business casual wardrobe, which I have now renamed eclectic business casual.  I created a few tips so you too can wear your favorite questionable T more often.

  1. It is best to test the waters on casual Friday.  Pair the T with jeans.  Make sure the jeans are in good condition so as to not create unnecessary attention to everything else you are wearing.
  2. Select a beer T that has a graphic print rather than a blatant logo. Unless your coworkers are as cool as you, they won’t know that your chest is emblazoned with Stone gargoyle.
  3. Now add a pair of heels.  You are not going to a BBQ, so flip flops are unacceptable.
  4. Accessorize! My preferred statement piece is a giant cocktail ring.  Pick your poison.
  5. Most office spaces are cold.  This is a perfect opportunity to wear a cardigan to dress it up.  You can also button up if the boss makes an expected appearance.
  6. Lastly, by all means, make sure it is a good beer!

Just One

The fiance: Do you feel like going home or getting a drink?
Me: I could do TCT or Eno’s.
The fiance: Definitely TCT, but just one beer.
Me: Yeah…just one.  God, I really want a beer.
Me: Does it make you hot when I say that?
The fiance: Giggles

My Love Affair is Over

It is big day for The Plastic Jungle…the food & wine category has changed to food & beer.  My serious love for hops and barley hit me when I was dining with a gf at Victor Tango’s Monday night.  I didn’t even glance at the wine list.  I went straight for the beer and ordered myself a Golden Monkey Tripel.  This isn’t the first time this has happened. I ignored it in the beginning like I ignore the fact that my natural hair color is not as blonde as I claim.  My love affair with Sauvignon Blanc is over.  I immediately texted the fiance to tell him that I had officially converted.  You would have thought I was a Catholic converting to Judaism (he would be Jewish in this example).  I think he fell in love with me all over again. Then he told me to order the Doggy Style.

I feel I should note that Victor Tango’s is worth an immediate visit for 3 reasons.  I will visit again and again for #3.

  1. Their excellent taste in music
  2. The adult beverages
  3. Ahi Tuna Nachos
